A gift, complete — no email wall, ever
Each week I set one full working on the table, free. This week: a walked banishing — candle, smoke, salt, and stone — the old craft's plain answer for a home that has gathered what does not belong in it.
Best performed
During a waning moon, or on a Tuesday — Mars' day, which the old correspondences give to the banisher's work. (If today is Tuesday, the timing has found you.)
You will need
- a white candle
- a sage or sweetgrass bundle
- sea salt
- a black tourmaline or obsidian stone
The working
- Light the white candle and gaze into its flame, breathing deeply to center yourself.
- With your non-dominant hand, walk slowly clockwise through each room of your home, wafting the smoke toward the corners while picturing a warding light closing around the space.
- In each doorway and window threshold, sprinkle a pinch of sea salt in a diagonal line from top-left to bottom-right, saying: "By air and earth, by fire and water, I cleanse this place of all that does not belong."
- Hold the black stone and walk clockwise three times around your home's perimeter, picturing all that does not belong gathering into the stone, leaving the rooms behind you swept and still.
- Return to your first room. Gaze once more into the candle's flame, then snuff it out — the old craft holds the working sealed as the last smoke rises.
(Mind the practical craft too: never leave a flame unattended, crack a window when you work with smoke, keep the bundle over a fireproof dish as you walk, and be mindful of little lungs — children, elders, and animals — sharing the rooms.)
Speak
> By air and earth, by fire and water, I cleanse this place of all that does not belong.
Practitioners hold that a banishing well-walked leaves a house that keeps itself. Tend it lightly: refresh the salt at the thresholds when it feels thin, and rinse the stone under running water when its work feels done.
